Chapter 13

Violet

Angry with Avery, I left him and went into the shack where I turned my attention to his brother who was still unconscious.

“Why aren’t you waking up?” I said softly as I ran my hand over his brow. His skin was cold and clammy.

I slipped my hand under his head in an attempt to sit him up. He was heavy and absolutely limp. “Come on, Axel.” His head fell forward against my shoulder and I slowly peeled back the bandage.

A small amount of dark blood stained the bandage.

“I’m the one who did that,” Avery called from the doorway. Leaning on his good leg, it was clear he was in pain.

I looked back at him. “You bandaged him?”

“Don’t look so surprised,” he said. “I’m not an animal.”

Aware of the animosity between them, I was indeed surprised.

“I might not always agree with my brother,” he said. “But I’m certainly not going to let him die in the forest like a dog.”

“I’m happy to hear that.” I reached for my gourde and poured a bit of water over the wound.

“How is he?” Avery called out.

“There’s little bleeding, but he has a nice bump.” I kept my eyes on Axel. “Does this mean that you two are going to be friends now?”

Avery chuckled but said nothing.

I knew he’d come to Islandia to be closer to me, and while I had found that flattering, I knew it’d driven a wedge between the brothers.

“Sibling rivalry is never pretty,” I said softly.

“What was that?” Avery called out.

I turned to look pointedly at him. “I said, sibling rivalry is never pretty. Family should always come first. It’s a shame you have to keep this fight with your brother alive.”

“And how many brothers and sisters do you have, Violet?”

Sucking in my cheeks, I tilted my head to the side and glared at him. “Do you really believe that because I have no siblings, I don’t know the importance of family? Have you ever stopped to consider, perhaps, how lonely I was as a sole child?”

Avery remained silent.

“No. I’m sure you haven’t,” I said. “Though you might be at each other’s throats now, I’m certain that you and Axel had fun when you were young boys. I’m certain you got into mischief together. I’m certain you both played tricks on one another. It’s sad really that something had to come between you two to throw all that away.”

“You say that as if it was entirely my choice. As if it was exclusively my fault. Axel did everything to discredit me in my father’s eyes. He did everything he could to ease himself closer and closer to my father, not out of love for the old king, but simply to ensure my father overlooked me as the future king and considered Axel instead.”

“Axel is young and bullheaded,” I admitted as I finished washing Axel’s wound and began bandaging it again. “He’s impulsive.”

“Don’t forget ambitious,” Avery added as he crossed his arms over his massive chest.

“I’m sure that, given time, Axel would come to realize that you’re the rightful heir to the throne,” I said.
